The CBI has launched a no-holds barred probe against Commonwealth Games organising committee (OC) chairman Suresh Kalmadi and former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan.
The agency raided the OC office and the houses of three committee officials in Delhi.
It also registered two cases relating to the Queen’s Baton Relay in London in 2009 and arrested top Kalmadi aides —- TS Darbari, former joint director general, and Sanjay Mahendroo, former deputy director general, on charges of forgery and cheating. The CBI also began a preliminary enquiry (PE) in the Adarsh scam.
The probe agency claimed that the e-mail Kalmadi flashed in a press conference to justify awarding of Queens Baton Relay contract to London-based AM Car was forged.
Kalmadi had produced the forged email in August, despite vehement denials by the Indian mission in UK. “The two e-mails were allegedly forged by OC officials to justify the selection of the firm. The work was awarded on the false premise that the firm was on the panel of Indian high commission,” a CBI spokesperson said.
On the Adarsh scam, he said, “We have started a PE on the complaint given by the defence ministry. We will look into all issues raised by the ministry, including the no-objection certificate, relinquishment of land in possession of the army and the extent to which commitments for welfare of defence personnel were complied with.”
Sources said Kalmadi is likely to be questioned as there are criminal charges against him and he may even be arrested. Though the CBI has not named him in the FIR, sources said circumstantial evidence against him is very strong.
“OC officials gave the contract to London-based firms [AM Car and AM Films] at exorbitant rates without following standard tendering processes. Works for installing video screens were awarded at exorbitant rates on the basis of fake quotations,” a CBI official said.
The probe will also focus on the fact that the contract awarded to AM Films had earlier awarded to another firm that was asking for lower rates. The CBI is also likely to pursue AM Car’s director Ashish Patel.
