Twenty-two new police stations will start operating in the national capital from tomorrow in order to ensure better policing of the city which has a significant floating population and is high on the terror radar.

The government had on September 1, 2009 announced the setting up of 29 new police stations, out of which seven have already started functioning even before getting official sanction. Station House Officers have already been posted in these police stations.

"We are starting it straightaway. We are keeping everything ready so that when the operations begin, everything is in place," a senior police official said.

Work is on to transfer cases and other paperwork related to the division and creation of the new police stations, the official said, adding "a lot of preparatory work has been done." With the new additions, the total number of territorial police stations in the city has increased to 155.

"This will help in better policing and better service to the people. There will be more beats which will help in reducing response time besides optimising the police-public ratio. This will help in better handling of cases," he said.

Delhi Police has, for long, been pressing for increasing its strength to ensure better policing and security in the capital, which ranks high among the terror targets in the country.

Besides the 155 territorial police stations, the city police has another 14 exclusive police stations for wings like Crime Branch, Economic Offences Wing, Delhi Metro, Special Cell, Crime Against Women Cell, Narcotics and Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Out of the 29 new police stations, 24 are in areas which fall outside the Outer Ring Road. Four new police stations have been added in North-West Delhi followed by three each in South, Outer and North-East, two each in South-East, South-West, West and East and one in Central Delhi.

The new police stations will be set up in Jaitpur, Saket, Neb Sarai, Govindpuri, Shahbad Dairy, Vijay Vihar, Chhawla, Mainwali Gali, Ranhola, Ranjit Nagar, Madhu Vihar, Jagatpuri, Pul Prahladpur, Sunlight Colony and Rohini-North.

Police Stations will also be set up in Begumpur, K N Katju Marg, Bahlaswa Dairy, Mahendra Park, Rani Bagh, Bharat Nagar, Jyoti Nagar, Sonia Vihar, Jafrabad, Dhaula Kuan, Dwarka-North, Safdarjung Enclave, Vasant Kunj-South and Fatehpuri.

In the past 19 years, Delhi Police has added 55 police stations with 40 of them coming up in the past one year. The national capital had 100 police stations in 1991 and another 16 were added eight years later.

"In less than one year from October 2008 to September 2009, the government accorded sanction of two districts, 12 sub-divisions and 40 police stations," the official said.
