As the mercury rises in the national capital, power woes have come back to haunt residents with several areas facing a string of power cuts ranging from one to three hours today.
Almost all the areas in South Delhi including Jangpura Extension, Defence Colony, Saket, Greater Kailash, South Extension faced power cuts of varying duration mainly due to a technical problem in the 400 KV grid station at Bamnauli.
Several areas in East, South and North Delhi also also experienced power cuts owing to the gap between demand and supply.
A power department official said the total demand in the city today shot up to 3,877 MW which has been the highest so far in the season. The maximum temperature touched 42.3 degree celsius today, which also the highest in the season.
He said power availability was also affected due to under frequency in the northern grid as many neighbouring states overdrew power from the grid.
Yesterday, the 400 KV grid station at Bamnauli had tripped because of the persistent under frequency related problem in the grid, he added.
The power demand yesterday was recorded at 3,764 MW as against 3,147 MW on the same day last year.
In the first 14 days of April this year, Delhi's consumption was 973 million units against 670 million units in first 14 days of April last year. "This is an increase of about 27%," the official said.
He said 26 under frequency related problems were reported in the last 24 hours.
The official said some areas in South Delhi were facing power cuts because of the planned shut down of 220 KV transmission line from Maharani Bagh to Lodhi Road power station.
The power line was closed on April nine to carry out work on the Barapullah Nallah elevated road. The line will be restored on April 19.
The official said discoms arranged additional power to the tune of up to 615 MW in the last 24 hours to meet the increasing demand.
