Bhopal verdict: NGO wants govt to file curative petition in Supreme Court

An NGO working for the Bhopal gas tragedy survivors today said that the blame-game over the disaster of 1984 should stop and centre and state government file a curative petition in the apex court to ensure that victims get justice.

"We want that the Centre and state government should immediately explore ways and file a curative petition in the Supreme Court and ensure that the convicts of Bhopal gas tragedy are re-tried speedily under section 304 II and punished with a long sentence," Bhopal Gas Peedith Mahila Udyog Sangathan convenor Abdul Jabbar told reporters in Bhopal.

He said that the law minister M Veerappa Moily's emotionally charged statement dubbing the verdict in the Bhopal tragedy case as "justice buried" won't do any good for the victims of the tragedy.

Also his statement blaming the then chief justice of India AM Ahmadi for diluting the charges to section 304 (A) (causing death due to negligence from section 304 II (Culpable homicide not amounting to murder) won't help the survivors of the tragedy, Jabbar said.

He said that the BJP state government should stop blaming Congress for the light punishment of two years awarded to the
then seven officials of Union Carbide of India Limited and escape of Warren Anderson, the then chairman of Union Carbide
Corporation US.

"The condition of the hospitals being run by the state government is in a bad shape. Rather than helping victims of the tragedy, the state government was politicking over the issue," Jabbar said.

The centre and state should immediately file a curative petition in the Apex Court to see that justice was delivered to the gas victims.
