The Union home ministry on Wednesday cleared the decks for Delhi police to interrogate two sitting and two former Member of Parliaments, including Amar Singh in the cash-for-vote scam probe.
In the midst of cash-for-vote controversy, the UPA I had managed to scrape through narrowly when its existence was put through an acid test of trust vote in the Parliament on the Indo-US nuclear deal issue.
The others include Samajwadi Party's sitting Lok Sabha MP Rewati Raman Singh and former BJP MPs Faggan Singh Kulaste and Mahavir Bhagora.
The Supreme Court has pulled up the Delhi police for going slow in the case. According to informed sources, the police, is expected to interrogate the politicians in question in the next two to three days.
The home ministry gave the Delhi police the go ahead as Amar Singh and Rewati Raman Singh were not involved in the acts of omission or commission within the Parliament and what all they alleged to have done happened outside Parliament.
With regard to sitting BJP MP from Bhind Ashok Argal, the home ministry, after seeking clarifications from Delhi police commissioner BK Gupta, would soon send a letter of request to Lok Sabha's presiding officer seeking speaker's permission to interrogate him.
The ministry took the decision late in the evening after home minister P Chidambaram met Gupta and sought clarification.
“As the MPs act within the Parliament, they are governed by privilege rules. It is necessary to seek the permission of the respective authority for any questioning of a sitting member of the parliament,” a senior home ministry official said.
On July 22, 2008, three BJP members - Argal, Kulaste and Bhagora - had placed Rs1 crore cash in the Lok Sabha alleging they were bribed by floor managers of the UPA government to secure support during the no-confidence motion after Left parties withdrew their support over the Indo-US nuclear deal.
After much delay, the Delhi police had registered a case in 2009 on the recommendations of a parliamentary committee constituted to look into the cash-for-vote scam.
