Former BJP youth wing leader shot dead in Punjab

A former BJP youth wing leader was allegedly shot dead today by armed assailants in Hargobind Nagar area in Phagwara, police said.

Former block president of Bharatiya Janta Yuva Morcha's (BJYM) Phagwara unit, Sudarshan Dhillon was travelling alone in his Maruti Alto when four armed men, who were in a Scorpio jeep, intercepted his car and attacked him with sharp edged weapons.

They later fired bullets from a close range into his head and killed him at the spot.

The assailants also escaped with the victim's licenced revolver which Dhillon was carrying, police said quoting the accounts of some eyewitness.

Soon after the incident, angry BJP workers and Dhillon's supporters blocked national highway number one blocking  vehicular traffic.

Agitating BJP and BJYM workers also forced shopkeepers to shut down their businesses and most shops in the town were closed till afternoon.

Police had to divert traffic through other routes in view of the blockade. Senior police officials had reached the spot to tackle the situation.
