Gujarat is making sincere efforts to strike the right balance between industrial growth and environment concerns. The state is initiating various measures to make industries more eco friendly. Gearing up for the Vibrant Gujarat 2011, the state is making a clear statement that investment will be welcomed in the state, but not at the cost of pollution.

Saurabh Patel, minister of state for industries, govt of Gujarat said, "Industries are welcome in the state but not at the cost of the environment. Pollution is the biggest challenge and we have to keep growing keeping in mind the need for clean environment."

The minister added: "We are taking various initiatives in this respect. We are planning to shift our public transport to CNG in the next 3-4 years. In addition, number of CNG stations also will be doubled in the year to 150 from 75.. We want to promote renewable energy and for this, we aim to purchase 10% of the state's total power requirement of the state from renewable energy sources like wind and solar."

Raghu Babu, senior programme specialist, Indo-German Environment Programme, said, "In Andhra Pradesh, we are working around 300 industrial clusters making them more environment friendly. To promote the concept of eco industrial parks in Gujarat, we will be working on two pilot projects soon."

Babu was speaking at the seminar on "Clean Technology: Need for Sustainable Development" held in the city on Saturday. The event provided a platform to the participants from all over Gujarat to understand emerging clean technologies and cleaner technology application in industries .

 JM Mauskar, IAS, additional secretary, ministry of environment and forests, government of India, said, "Sustainable development is the key and clean technology is one of the ways to achieve it. We should focus on optimum use of natural resources and not maximization.”

Arvind Agarwal, vice-chairman & MD, GIDC said: "Gujarat has more than 60% of the country's petro-chemicals and 50% of the chemical industry, hence it is vital for the state to focus on the environment.”
