Ahmedabad student Sharad Mirani came back to his hometown after clinching the gold medal at the 5th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) held in Poland.
"Mirani is the shining star of Gujarat and India as he has made the state and country proud" - This is how he was addressed to when Ahmedabad student Sharad Mirani came back to his hometown after clinching the gold medal at the 5th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) held in Poland. Truly, the sky is the limit for this young achiever who has created history of sorts by making a hattrick, successive medals in three years in Science Olympiads in three different subjects. The 5th Olympiad was held from August 25 to September 3 at in and around the cities of Katowice, Chorzów and Krakow.
A student of Prakash Higher Secondary School in Ahmedabad, Sharad was the first student of Gujarat to represent India at the International Earth Science Olympiads held at Taiwan during 2009 and again at the International Astronomy Olympiads (Jr.) in Ukraine in 2010. He again represented the country at the 5th International Olympiads in Astronomy and Astrophysics in Poland in 2011.
After his arrival in the city, Sharad was felicitated by the Gujarat Science City at Ravishankar Raval Kala Bhavan, Ahmedabad, where additional chief secretary, Department of Science & Technology, Government of Gujarat, Ravi S Saxena awarded him a medal for his superlative performance.
Eulogising Sharad's talent Saxena said that he is a role model for thousands of other students of his age, who can draw inspiration and get encouragement to prepare for the 6th IOAA to be held at Rio de Janeiro in Brazil in 2012".
Sharad is one among the five students who were selected at the Indian National Astronomy Olympiad Orientation-cum-Selection Camp (OCSC) held at Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), Mumbai from April 25 to May 14, 2011. The other four students were Jeevan Priya (Hyderabad), RSB Bhardwaj (Hyderabad), Akhil Kedia (Kolkata) and Akshay Krishna (Bangalore).
IOAA is a world scientific activities' forum that is carried out for 10 days in which high school students from around the globe compete against each other in solving theoretical, analytical and observational problems in the fields of astronomy and astrophysics. A total of 31 countries participated in this year's event.
