Gujarat might be witnessing heavy industrialisation, but students in engineering, pharmacy and business administration disciplines don't seem to get the right share of the pie of job opportunities created in the state. So to push the students to grab jobs, Gujarat Technological University (GTU) is planning a new placement system called lateral placement in colleges affiliated to the varsity.

Lateral placements will provide opportunity to students for jobs as companies would visit the campuses even after the regular placement season gets over. This arrangement will help the students who fail to impress prospective recruiters during the regular placement season.

According to GTU vice-chancellor Dr Akshai Aggarwal, the university will start lateral placements in   engineering, pharmacy, MBA and MCA colleges from this year. He said they came up with the idea after seeing the results of the regular placement seasons at GTU affiliated colleges, where not many students got placed and those who got placed managed to get an average salary of Rs2 lakh to Rs2.5 lakh. The highest salary was Rs5 lakh a year.

"There were many students who did not get placed at all. It may be for   various reasons, but like other students they also want a good job after getting a degree. Currently, the system is such that colleges invite companies to campus to recruit students. There are some colleges in remote parts of the state and they do not have enough infrastructure and even training placement officers. These colleges find it difficult to get good companies for recruitment," he said.

To facilitate the placement process, GTU also plans to start 'Integrated Training and   Placement Cell'. "Introduction of lateral placements would be part of the cell. One of the objectives of the cell is also to centralise the placement system so that all colleges can get recruiters. We will train placement officers, who will interact with the companies in order to invite them to placements through the new cell," Aggarwal said.
