India-US working closely to prevent terror acts, says US ambassador

The US today said that it was working closely with India on the Headley-Rana case to detect and prevent future terror attacks.

The two countries are working as partners "better than ever before to facilitate information sharing, build capacity to prevent and respond to terror threats and assist in the prosecution of those who commit terror," US ambassador to India Timothy J Roemer said here.

Referring to the visit of the FBI team here and the briefing of Indian law enforcement officials, he said it was clear and was concrete evidence that the US and India were fulfilling president Barak Obama and prime minister Manmohan Singh’s "vision of unparallelled and unprecedented cooperation in the counter terror arena."

He said the visit of the FBI and justice department team is a direct follow-on to the Counter Terrorism Cooperation Initiative launched during Singh's historic first state visit of the Obama administration.

"Both our countries are working closely together to share information on the Headley-Rana case and working to detect and prevent future threats," the ambassador said.

The joint team of department of justice and FBI briefed the Indian law enforcement agencies yesterday and today about the leads emerging from the investigations of US national David Headley and his associate Tahawwur Rana, arrested by the FBI in October this year, for allegedly plotting terror strikes in India and Denmark.

The team was to brief officials in Pakistan immediately after their stay in India.
