As state and central intelligence inputs suggest that the Maoists are regrouping and consolidating their hold in their areas of influence, chief minister Mamata Banerjee has chosen to visit the areas with some of the top state bureaucrats.

Sources said while Banerjee was expected to leave for West Midnapore on Monday evening, top bureaucrats, including chief secretary Samar Ghosh is likely to join her on Tuesday to review the development packages and their outcome on the people with district officials.

Banerjee, who earlier announced a series of socio-economic packages for the affected belt, including bringing tribal and non-tribal populations in the area under special food security scheme, is expected to renew her assurance to extremists-influenced tribals and non-tribals to come forward for economic development.

Though state government officials are tight-lipped about details of her visit for apparent reason of security, party sources said besides reiterating her message of economic development, she would tell people in the affected belt to abjure violence in favour of peace and development.

Sources said what seemed to have hastened the process of her visit has been the brewing disquiet in the area for quiet some time now though no major incident of any post-poll violence took place.
Notwithstanding her package, her announcement - until the extremists lay down their arms, Central forces would remain in the area - was read as a major departure from her pre-poll political line which said that her government would withdraw central forces.

What added to the worry of the state government has also been an appeal issued by CPI (M) in Dandakaranya in the wake of Supreme Court’s recent judgement in which Maoists claimed that the Special Police Officers appointed from tribals to fight them was dismissed as unconstitutional.

Political observers here feel that during her visit she would try to isolate Maoists from the local people.
