Telangana, which had taken a break from protests for statehood, is witnessing revival in activity following self-immolation of a student in Warangal district. Bhojya Naik, an MBA student of a private college in Warangal, committed suicide on Saturday by setting himself ablaze while protesting against comments made by Congress leaders including G Venkata Ramana Reddy and others.

Reddy, who is the chief whip of the Congress, had said the Telangana demand had tapered and by 2014 election there would be no such demand.

Naik, even in his dying declaration, has reportedly named some of the political leaders as reason for his suicide. He died while undergoing treatment in a hospital in Warangal.

Things took an ugly turn during the funeral procession of Naik when Telangana activists accompanying the mortal remains of Naik deviated from the procession and attacked the residences and offices of various Congress and TDP leaders. Thousands of protestors hurled stones at the residences of chief whip Reddy and senior TDP leader E Dayakar Rao and the Congress’s office in the district. Agitated protestors resorted to physical attack on Pradeep Rao, Dayakar Rao’s brother, when he tried to pay tribute to Naik’s body.

Telangana Congress MPs called an “emergency meeting”, Sunday evening, to inform the party high-command that the party’s image was getting diluted primarily due to the delay in taking a decision on Telangana. Though unconfirmed, a delegation of the Telangana Congress leaders is likely to meet the party leadership shortly to explain the ground situation.

The situation has been grim in the region ever since the recent by-polls which resulted in the Congress facing a rout and TRS sweeping in various constituencies. In an unexpected development, BJP, which has been a marginal party in Andhra Pradesh, won an assembly seat in Mahabubnagar.

“While the Congress being a national party, has been ridiculing the regional parties like the TRS on their ability to achieve statehood to the region, BJP is now emerging as an alternate to the Congress and the TRS,” a source in the Congress party told DNA.

TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao has decided to go to Delhi to raise the Telangana issue and the suicide of Bhojya Naik.
