Opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh on Friday launched a scathing attack on the state government following Allahabad High Court's stern observations on the SP regime's move seeking permission to withdraw cases against two suspects of 2006 Varanasi serial blasts which had claimed 25 lives.
"We welcome the Allahabad high court's strong observations on the state government that if any government withdraws cases against terrorists it would amount to encouraging terrorism," leader of opposition in the Assembly Swami Prasad Maurya said.
"This step of the SP government needed to be condemned thoroughly by all", Maurya said, adding, it only goes on to prove the "goondaraj mentality" of the SP government.

Misra questioned the justification of such a move and said that HC has rightly made strong observations against the state government.
Pradip Mathur of the Congress said the issue here is not of any petty criminal or an innocent who has been wrongly implicated. "This concerns terror charges", he said asking how relaxation can be made in the case of terrorist, dreaded gangster or a criminal.
The court while hearing a public interest litigation challenging the Akhilesh Yadav government's decision to seek a review of charges against Waliullah and Shameem, suspects in the blast at Sankatmochan temple had said "you are withdrawing cases against them, tomorrow will you give them the Padma Bhushan?".
The Akhilesh government had earlier written to the district magistrates of Lucknow, Faizabad, Gorakhpur, Varanasi and Rampur, asking if there was sufficient evidence to prosecute suspects in the 2006 serial blasts and other terror attacks in the state.
In its election manifesto, the ruling Samajwadi Party had promised to review charges against terror suspects to prevent the harassment of innocents.
