National air carrier Air India resumed its flights to London from Wednesday, a week after volcanic eruptions in Iceland forced cancellation of flights.

Officials said that the flight AI 131 left for Mumbai from Ahmedabad at 9.00 pm on Wednesday. The flight was slated to take-off from Mumbai at 2.20 am, and reach London at 7.30 am.

Emirates, which operates ten international flights a week out of Ahmedabad, has also resumed its London flight via Dubai from Wednesday. The airline is also flying to many other destinations in Europe which were closed for almost a week due to clouds of volcanic ash over most parts of the continent.

Singapore Airlines, which also operates international flights, has started flying to London and other destinations in Europe via Singapore. Officials said that the airline is likely to follow the normal schedule from tomorrow. The restarting of flights to London has come as a big relief for the airlines as well as passengers.

However, airline officials said that the situation across Europe remained unpredictable and developments were being very closely monitored. Officials also said that it would take some days before normalcy is restored on the routes.

Air India has already commenced its daily flight from Ahmedabad to US via Mumbai, which will fly to Newark with a halt at Cairo. The flight will take off from Ahmedabad at 1.35 am, depart from Mumbai at 4.30 am and is slated to reach Newark at 4.20 pm.

Meanwhile, AI officials said the airline has made arrangements for re-booking of all confirmed passengers on the cancelled Air India flights to Europe/US and Canada up to May 31, and that even the re-booking charges have been waived off.
