Wednesday dealt a double blow to former Haryana DGP SPS Rathore, convicted in the Ruchika Girhotra molestation case.
While a court in Panchkula denied him interim bail in two fresh FIRs registered against him by the Haryana police, the Centre also stepped in to oversee investigations and explore the possibility of re-opening the case to slap the abetment-of-suicide charge on him.
The Haryana police, meanwhile, set up a seven-member special investigation team to probe Ruchika’s molestation, the subsequent intimidation of her brother Ashu, and how the post-mortem report was allegedly tampered with so that it couldn’t corroborate the abetment-of-suicide charge (section 306 of the IPC).
Ruchika’s father Subhash Chander Girhotra and the family’s counsel Pankaj Bhardwaj met Union home minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday to discuss whether it was possible to re-open the case.
Not ruling out another meeting with senior officials, Bhardwaj said the ministry has demanded “key documents”, which he will furnish.
About filing an appeal in the Supreme Court to seek enhancement of Rathore’s punishment, Bhardwaj said that there are many other aspects to the case.
