Suicide attackers struck at the Jammu and Kashmir capital for the first time in two years on Wednesday.
Two fidayeen stormed the Lal Chowk area at the heart of Srinagar, killing one policeman and injuring nine others.
The last major terror attack in the city took place on October 11, 2007 at the Dalgate area. The Omar Abdullah government had celebrated its first anniversary on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, the terrorists lobbed grenades and fired from assault rifles, before taking shelter in a local eatery. The encounter was still on till last reports came in.
The Jamiat-ul-Mujhadeen claimed responsibility for the attack. But police believe it to be the handiwork of the Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Eyewitnesses said two militants surfaced near the busy area at 2pm and fired at a police vehicle, killing driver Mohammad Yousuf.
“They also used smoke bombs to disperse the crowd before lobbing a grenade,” a policeman said.
The militants lobbed grenades on a CRPF post nearby. This was followed by heavy exchange of fire. The militants hopped from one building to another before hiding in an eatery called the Punjab Hotel.
Police evacuated the buildings around the eatery.
“They are most probably from across the border. To avoid any collateral damage, we have secured the buildings around the hotel,” said deputy inspector general of CRPF (Operations) Nalin Prabhat.
Even as the encounter was on, a mob shouting pro-Pakistan slogans surfaced in the nearby Miasuma and Budshah Chowk areas and started pelting stones on the security forces.
Police cane-charged and lobbed smoke shells to disperse the mob.
The attack took place just a day after Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari said his country would fight for 1,000 years to “liberate” Kashmir.
The militant strike also coincided with the separatists’ meeting with Pakistan’s national assembly speaker Fahmeeda Mirza in New Delhi.
The daring attack comes barely a week after director general of police Kuldeep Khoda said there was a 25% drop in terrorist violence and that no suicide attack had taken place in Kashmir in the last two years.
