After the Himachal government acquired the benami  piece of land on which the 17th karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje has been staying for the last almost 10 years, to whom it would be leased out now, the Karmapa or the Tibetan government-in-exile ?

The 24-kanal land of the Gyuto monastery, where the karmapa, has been staying since 2000 when he came to Dharamsala, was vested in the name of government on Tuesday.

Though the Karmapa has been staying there in the Gyuto monastery, it is practically owned by the Tibetan Administration, which is a wing of the Tibetan government-in-exile. Now either the Karmapa or the Tibetan administration would take it on lease from the state government paying 10% of the market price.

Sources in the Kangara district administration said a section of the Tibetan administration want to take the Karmapa’s land on lease for itself, whereas the Karmapa would like that it was leased out to him.

“Legally, however, only the Tibetan government-in-exile is entitled to take the state land on lease, but since the payment to be made for it could run into crores, the Tibetan administration is divided on the matter,” said a senior revenue official.
