In an attempt to strike a balance between the young and the old, within the party, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday formed the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the highest decision-making body of the party. In his first major decision after he took charge as party president, Rahul, picked up young faces while keeping intact the old guards in the new CWC.

Rajasthan has once again found representation in Rahul’s scheme of things with AICC general secretary (Organisation) and former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot finding a place in the committee which consists of 23 members. Gehlot’s inclusion reflects his growing stature at 24 Akbar Road. Along with Gehlot, tribal leader and former Congress MP from Udaipur, Raghuveer Meena has been inducted in the CWC. Meena is said to be a Gehlot loyalist and his inclusion is also being seen as a planned move by the party to appease tribal after Kirori Lal Meena’s Ghar Vapasi in BJP recently.

The inclusion of their names in the committee has surprised many within the state Congress. From Rajasthan, the names of Gehlot, Bhanwar Jitendra Singh and CP Joshi were being floated in inner party circles as top choice in CWC. Though, Gehlot and Meena have found a place, Singh as a permanent invitee was included in the panel. Apart from 23 permanent members, Rahul has also made 18 permanent invitees and 10 special invitees in the panel.

The new CWC list clearly reflects the downfall of CP Joshi who was once part of Rahul’s core team. It is believed that Rahul used to honour Joshi’s advise in the affairs of Rajasthan. It now appears that the old warlord from Rajasthan has lost his charm. Rahul not only kept him out from the CWC but also divested him from the charge of Assam, replacing him with ex-Uttarakhand CM Harish Rawat. Joshi earlier was divested from the charge of Bihar and Andaman and Nicobar.

Rahul, after being nominated as the party president, disbanded the previous working committee which had CP Joshi, Jitendra Singh and Mohan Prakash as members from Rajasthan. This committee was replaced by a steering committee of 34 members which included AICC general secretaries Gehlot, Joshi and Avinash Pandey (Rajasthan in-charge) from the desert state. Pandey, who is a senior leader from Maharashtra and incharge of Rajasthan, has been inducted in the panel too while Prakash failed to secure a place this time.

Undoubtedly, Gehlot’s stature has grown in the eyes of the party high command after the Gujarat Assembly election results and also after how the Congress formed a government in alliance with JDS in Karnataka. In the plenary session held earlier this year, Gehlot’s proximity to Sonia and Rahul was quite visible. He was sitting in the front row next to the mother-son duo.
