Jaipur: Three of a family drown in pond

In a shocking incident that occurred in Kot Khawda area of Jaipur on Wednesday afternoon, three members of a family including a fourteen-year-old boy, died due to drowning. The trio had gone out to graze buffaloes when the child slipped towards deeper part of a pond and while rescuing him the two women identified as the child’s grandmother and aunt also drowned and died. 

The cops, aided by volunteers, recovered the bodies and handed over the bodies to the family members after postmortem.

According to the police, the deceased have been identified as Sunil, 14, his grandmother Shanti Devi, 59, and his paternal uncle’s wife Sugna Devi, 30.

“The trio were residents of Bairawo ki Dhani under Badoriya village of Kot Khawda police station area. On Wednesday morning, Sunil, Sugna and Shanti Devi had left their home in order to graze their buffaloes in the forested parts where a good undergrowth has occurred due to recent rains,” said Kanhaiya Lal Gurjar, Station House Officer (SHO) Kot Khawda police station.

After hours of roaming around with the herd for food, the trio brought the buffaloes to a pond full of water. “A few buffaloes entered the water and while grazing two of them suddenly began to fight. Shanti asked her grandson Sunil to intervene so that they do not create panic among rest of the herd. Since the buffaloes appeared to be in just knee deep water, the child entered the pond. However, from the side where he entered, the land had become slippery and had deep pits inside the pond. The boy slipped and fell in the deep section of the pond,” the SHO said.

Frantically, the boy started throwing his arms in the water in an attempt to keep swimming. “He kept drifting into deeper waters and as the two women saw him in distress they ran to help. 

Sugna entered the water first and received similar fate as Sunil. She too slipped and before she could recover, she was also in deep water,” the SHO informed.

Realising that the young daughter-in-law and the grandchild might drown, Shanti too entered the water. “However she could not cope with the deep water and the trio drowned on the spot. 

Some passersby saw the trio trying to save themselves, however, before anyone could rescue them, they drowned. The police was informed which then rushed to the spot and with the help of swimmers and a few volunteers, the bodies were recovered. The family members were contacted and the bodies were handed over to them after post mortem,” the SHO said
