    Even though it been six years that India registered its last polio case, the people who survived polio virus are still fighting to lead a normal life. 

    A doctor’s daughter was afflicted  with polio because of a mistake by another doctor treating her fever. Dr Priya Marwah, a bone marrow transplant surgeon, has been fighting to lead a normal life since 49 years she contracted polio.

    “It was a day after my first birthday, I had some viral fever. The doctor initially thought I had blood cancer and later he said it can be a malaria. They gave me two intramuscular injections and by third my mother refused to get me treated for the same because my situation was getting worse. That time I contracted polio,” shared Marwah.

    Marawah couldn’t get up from her bed for a few years after she got polio. “I started going to school at the age of 6. However, being good at studies, I was promoted to senior classes and by the time I completed 10th standard I was of same age as the other people of my class,” she said. 

    The life wasn’t simple for Marwah at school even though she has been a bright student. “There were times I was let down because of my disability. Kids threw stone on me on the street. 

    In school despite being good at studies and even holding positions for two consecutive years, my teachers didn’t made me school president because of my disability,” she added. 

    “That was a turning point in my life. I was shattered and since then I never opened up to anyone.”

    Marwah decided to be a doctor and became a bone marrow transplant surgeon and started treating children with thalassemia. Marwah even drives a car today for which she designed hand breaks. Despite all her accomplishments, she still faces a discrimination which she doesn’t let it affect her.

    Marwah has two adopted daughters, her elder daughter was suffering from bilateral hearing disorder which she got treated. She also support a lot of charities and is even paying for the education of a boy.
