Take style lessons from your granny! The classic aviator metal frames, which give a nod to our older and wiser relatives, has become a wardrobe must-have. The eye accessory that’s a deviation from the thick black rimmed glasses, is an easy way to add a quirky touch to your ensemble. Aviators today come in a variety of styles and materials making it a versatile choice for stars. And the lightweight metal look has been seen in Spring Summer 2018 offerings from Dior, Prada, Vera Wang, and Chloe. Selena Gomez was recently clicked while on a coffee run pairing her grandma frames with a printed tee, leggings and a denim jacket. Hailey Baldwin is also a fan of the style sometimes teaming it with athleisure wear and other times with an LBD. Emily Ratajkowski and Bella Hadid too favour this eyewear and Justin Bieber has been seen sporting it in the past.

GIVES A NEW SPIN

The appeal of the grandma glasses is that it can instantly make one look of-the-moment regardless of what you’re wearing. Stylist and designer Eshaa Amiin says these glasses give a whole new spin to your ensemble. “The beauty of these glasses is that they suit all types of faces. Big frames make you look classic and sophisticated. Just ensure that it doesn’t overpower your outfit. Opt for a simple and casual look like a pair of high-waist blue jeans and a classic white shirt with leather black boots or even pair it with a mini retro style dress and a bandana on the head besides sandals,” suggests Eshaa.

VERSATILE LOOK

It’s not just international faces that have taken a liking to this accessory. Recently, Shilpa Shetty Kundra was snapped flaunting aviator frames at the airport that worked well with her trackpants and top look. Rani Mukerji opted for a tinted pair when she stepped out in Bandra and even Sonam Kapoor has been seen going experimental with eye accessories. Celebrity stylist Aastha Sharma explains that trends always make a comeback and the popularity of this style is due to the retro revival. “They give you a vintage classic feel, yet look very trendy. Such glasses have been seen in editorials for fashion houses like Dior, Armani and Versace. It also suits most Indian face shapes. In fact, our actresses from Sonam Kapoor to Deepika Padukone, Jacqueline Fernandez and even Esha Gupta pull it off really well,” she says, adding, “While this look is perfect for a casual or boho ensemble, it can be teamed with a pantsuit too.”

HAVE FUN WITH IT

Grandma glasses are very much in at the moment and can be worn both as reading glasses or even sunnies. “The whole ’80s aviator look is in vogue currently,” explains designer Pria Kataaria Puri. “While a large pair of glasses look more glamorous, a small pair can make you look a bit old and aged. When worn right these look cute as a button. They can be paired with officewear or even for a casual dinner. However, this is not a red carpet trend.”

She suggests wearing it in a casual fun manner. Celebrity stylist and fashion consultant Isha Bhansali too agrees. “One needs to have a quirky personality and a fun approach to dressing to pull it off. Also, not all frames suit round faces. I feel it doesn’t work for everybody,” she adds.
