The preppy souvenir jacket has been enjoying the spotlight over the last five years and shows no signs of fading out if Spring Summer 19 collections are any yardstick to go by.

From Dolce & Gabbana, Dior Homme, Louis Vuitton, Valentino and Saint Laurent internationally to Indian designers like Troy Costa, Sahil Aneja and Kunal Rawal — almost every major label has experimented with the athleisure piece. B-Town’s cool dudes like Karan Johar and Ranveer Singh have owned it like a pro and ‘it’ girls like Kareena Kapoor Khan and her girl gang have worn it with a glam-leisure spin. But looks like souvenir bomber’s glory days are far from over as for Spring Summer 19, too, almost every major menswear design house has showcased a version of it. Designer Gaurav Khanijo observes that most men gravitate towards a short length jacket and the bomber style is one cut that every body type can wear.

“It has a street and casual appeal to it. In my new campaign, I’ve done a bomber and bandhgala hybrid,” says Gaurav.

Men’s LBD

It’s one silhouette which has been played out and comes in new forms season after season and it’s not hard to understand as most heritage labels have military style ingrained in their DNA. “It’s like a Little Black Dress for men. I like Zegna’s and Corneliani’s take on it. 3.1 Phillip Lim has even showcased bomber shirts. Dries Van Noten has done printed silk bombers. So, one has a wide array of options to pick from depending on the occasion,” says Kunal.

It’s here to stay

With athleisure still the key runway story, experts see bomber’s dominance lasting for the next four years. Designer Troy Costa observes that it exudes youthful, urbane and vibe. “Designers have flirted with it in knit, cotton, neoprene and nylon which makes its evolution exciting. It’s not going anywhere and it’s the coolest thing today,” says Troy.
