Why do most brides end up looking like flickering Christmas trees? More importantly, on the most important day of their lives, they don’t even look like themselves but something from a bridal catalogue. All caked-up and visibly uncomfortable! Especially when they have spent a fortune to look their best. Stylist Divyak D’Souza observes, “Most of them get it all wrong when they follow trends. Being on-trend is a big mistake.”

Being oneself and staying true to one’s taste and personality is of paramount importance. “Celebrate yourself and don’t ape any celebrity. Stick to a colour palette which works for you. Needless to say, ‘less is more’ in terms of make-up and don’t look like a wax replica from Madame Tussauds,” says designer Nachiket Barve.

INVEST IN SEPARATES

It’s crucial to go for pieces, which have a mix-and-match appeal and can be worn at various functions. Nachiket adds, “One has to strike a fine balance of jewellery and clothes and opt for modular pieces. Most importantly, don’t sacrifice comfort for style and the bidaai tears shouldn’t be for other reasons.” While it’s one thing to stay on trend and inculcate what’s in, OD-ing on fads on your wedding day isn’t a great idea. “Leave risqué styles for other functions. Don’t take impulsive decisions about the outfit. In fact, take a photo test and see how you feel about it. All in all, don’t overwhelm your brain and don’t keep changing motif colours. In fact, when you meet the designer, have an element of trust and be clear about what you want,” suggests Nachiket.

TRIED AND TESTED ISN’T HALF BAD

One needs to be aware of one’s skin tone. “What works for the location, the time of the day — keep all that in mind. Opt for something traditional and classic as in future no one will remember which designer you wore, but did you look great in it,” adds Divyak.

MEASUREMENTS MEAN THE WORLD

Barve underscores the importance of measurements. “Be realistic and do your measurements realistically and don’t go through a metamorphosis,” says he.

DON’T BE MISS MATCH MUCH

Colour-coordinating with your groom isn’t all that flattering and keep those shenanigans for another day. Designer Aniket Satam says, “The biggest mistake is going complete matchy-matchy, and somewhere this monotony of everything cohesive should break and bride should experiment with a contrasting palette, at least when it comes to jewellery and the groom should completely avoid twinning with the bride.”
