If you are not a shopping addict or a mall fan, then you should head straight to the deserts when you are in Dubai. It is one experience you’ll cherish for a long time. There are three safaris here — morning, evening and night. It can get hot around noon and comes sans the belly dancing, so one would prefer to go for the evening or the overnight one.

How it starts
After a 4X4 picks you up, it will take you to a petrol pump and wait for all the other SUVs to reach there. Then a group of 6-8 SUVs goes off road and takes to the dunes. Dune bashing, a rough ride over the dunes, is like a thrilling roller coaster ride. Make sure you don’t eat just before you go dune bashing as it may cause you to throw up.

Just fasten your seat belt and get ready for an exciting time. The driver will take you up the sandy dunes, turn the steering wheel suddenly to the left or right and go down steep slopes. At times you feel the car will overturn and at times the sand engulfs the car. As you enjoy the ride, it’s fun to try to photograph other cars in the group too. One tip— try getting a front seat as it is the easiest position to get excellent pictures of dune bashing and also gives you a complete experience. Many people even drive down in their private vehicles to get some first-hand experience.

Desert duellers
The SUVs stop in the middle of the desert to let you click some pictures. Spare some time to take a walk in the desert at this hour and just soak in the ambience. Then, the vehicles take you to the desert camp where you can enjoy some sheesha (hookah), henna painting and a buffet too! The food is okay, have it with unlimited soft drinks and sheesha!

If you’re expecting a long camel ride here, you could be disappointed. The free ride is exactly two-minute long and gives you only a tiny opportunity to photograph yourself atop a camel. But what you should try out here is the free sand surfing right outside the camp. It could be intimidating in the beginning as you see people fall, but it hardly ever hurts as the sand acts as a soft bed. Once you get the hang of it, you won’t feel like stopping.

Same is true for the paid buggy or bike ride, both are equally fun.
A tip: Watch the sun set from the top of the dunes and then head back to the camp for some performance. After the warm-up with some fire dance and other acts comes the belly dance.
The safari ends on a high note as you cheer and groove to the moves of the beautiful dancer.
