Singing out their message

In the coming week we will see two big rock concerts one after the other at Blue Frog — both promoting a social cause. While Fight Back is creating awareness on gender equality, Something Relevant will concentrate on environmental issues.

Something Relevant has been involved with Gaia Music which was formed with the vision to unite all cultures, races, ages and sexes in the battle against climate change. “We have been trying to save 400 acres of land at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park for some years now. And now that we have got that land back, we want to get our fans involved in taking care of it,” says Stuart, bassist of Something Relevant. “Our fans who also come from a similar background like us identify with our music and it makes more impact when we say something through our music,” adds Stuart.

Arjun Vagale who does mixing for electronic music band Jalebee Cartel will also join Something Relevant on stage for this concert.

On the other hand Fight Back which is doing the Music for Equality concert was founded by Zubin Driver who has been doing loads of awareness campaigns on gender equality since its foundation in 2008. After doing television commercials and putting stalls at Kala Ghoda, Fight Back has now roped in artists like Adrian DSouza who is now the artistic director of the project, and other band members like Vinay Lobo (guitar), Kenneth Rebello (bass), Arijit Datta and Nikhil D Souza (vocals) who will play their original music.

“The main idea is to reach out to people who have already come together for something common. Music and art can help social agendas,” says Zubin. “Female foeticide and rape cases happen even in urban India. Patriarchy is embedded in our social system. We want to change this. Both sexes are equal.” Interestingly it’s an all-male team propagating this cause.
