Half way through fashion week and everyone seems to be complaining how there isn’t much of a buzz around this season. It’s true though! This time around it does seem to be rather quiet. I am not quite sure why. Is it because there aren’t too many buyers around or is it because the press is bored with the lack of celebrities around? I for one am glad that so far this week has not been about Bollywood, but just about fashion for a change.
Most of the designers have also realised that bringing in a movie star is quite unnecessary most times. It does get them a lot of media attention and publicity, but the ones who do design for the movies have that anyway. And then it becomes all about using their friendship with the actors, asking them for a friendly favour to walk for them which most of them have exhausted already.
I think they have also realised that this week should be more about the trade rather than showing off. Front rows filled with celeb guests are enough to do the job. Take Manish Malhotra. He had a packed front row, but only his creations on the ramp. Avanti Birla and Amrita Rao came in rather early and ended up watching us rehearse the show before it started.
Nikasha Tawadey’s show was really appreciated. Her calm serene Zen-like aura caught on to us and that’s the feel she wanted. We rehearsed walking really slow for her show as she wanted her fine, delicate hand embroidered garments to be noticed, especially by the critics. Following her was Nachiket Barve. The mood, the music and the colours picked up for his show. Being the shy teddy bear that he is, he didn’t want to walk the whole ramp to take a bow, but we convinced him to. I’m sure he’s glad that he did.
So I think the models, the make-up artists, the guests (who enjoy a whole lot of freebies from the sponsors) are all having a good time. Who may not be having a good one are the sponsors themselves, or some of the designers as there seems to be not too many buyers. Us models on the other hand decided to make the most of this week and had a little party of our own thanks to a wine bar that’s situated right outside our green room. They mixed up some real yum wine cocktails for us and we were all set to rock our next show!
