Mumbai college girl picks pockets in trains, caught

A 19-year-old college girl was arrested by the Dadar railway police on Friday for allegedly indulging in pick-pocketing and mobile phone theft in the ladies compartment of local trains.

“Shilpa Shelar was booked for theft and the police recovered a purse containing cash of Rs1,200 and a mobile phone worth Rs27, 000 from her,” said inspector Nitin Bobade of the Dadar railway police station. He claimed that Shelar stole to add to her pocket money. She has been remanded in police custody till April 16 by the CST railway court.

During interrogation, Shilpa told the police that she lives at Chembur and is a first-year commerce student at a Chembur college. She is also pursuing her studies at ICWA at its Churchgate institute. She admitted in indulging in nefarious activities for the last four months and having pick-pocketed five to six times. She claimed that she had found the mobile phone, which does not have a SIM card, abandoned in a CST-bound local train.

The railway police are tracking the real owner of the mobile phone, said Bobade.

Shelar’s parents and sibling were shocked when they heard that she has been arrested. The railway police found no stolen items from her residence, Bobade added.
