BMC may install underground garbage bins system in Mumbai

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is mulling the installation of underground garbage bins in the city. Underground garbage bins are dug on the sides of roads and are covered with a flap, which can be lifted by pushing a lever by foot.

To begin the project with, the civic body has identified four tentative locations — Vasantrao Naik Marg opposite Dhobi Ghat, L Jagmohandas Marg near Napeansea House and opposite Parsi Baudi on Karamveer Marg and opposite Sessions Court in Fort on the same road.

Tenders have been floated for the jack-type bins with expectation of good number of bidders. The estimated cost of a bin is Rs 12 lakh.

The capacity of each garbage bin will be 1100 litres. Each bin will have two intake bins and it will have a hydraulic lifting system, and a flap that can be operated by the foot to dump garbage.

The objective of the project is to rid the roads from heaps on garbage. The inspiration for the project comes from Madhya Pradesh's Lahore city, which has installed underground waste bins system.

Additional Municipal Commissioner, Vijay Singhal said, "The purpose is to eliminate the dustbins on roads in commercial areas. The underground garbage bins will have a box with only flap covers visible on the roads from where people can dump garbage. Once the bins are successfully installed on these locations, we will try to install them at other locations in the city. Tenders are already floated and the systems will be installed in within next four months."
