Patients will soon be able to reach Bombay Hospital near Churchgate without much hassle as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to complete the road widening work by the first week of April.
In order to help motorists, especially vehicles carrying patients, reach Bombay Hospital without any delays, the artery road work was proposed in 1967 but could not be taken up due to various reasons including a well that stood along the road which delayed the project.
Kiran Dighavkar, assistant commissioner, A ward said that the one-way lane will be converted into two-lane. "Motorists facing traffic snarls while going to the hospital via an alternate route wastes at least 15 minutes during the golden hour," he said, and added, "The issue of the well will also be solved to complete the road work." Currently, the only route available to patients is via Vitthaldas Thackeray Marg.
According to a civic official, the height of the well has been increased and a concrete slab will be used to cover it. The civic body will make provisions to use water from the well.
The decision to widen the road was taken after Vijay Singhal, additional municipal commissioner, visited the area. The road is 12.30-metre-wide and will be increased to 21.34-metre approximately.
