The ambitious and long-pending Crawford Market redevelopment project of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has got a shot in the arm after two national level firms have shown interest in redesigning and upgrading the market.

“The firms Skyway Infra Projects and Kinjal Construction have submitted their tender documents and the city engineering department of the BMC is scrutinising the same. The work is expected to start work from October 2017,” a senior civic official told DNA.

The revamp of the Crawford market project is expected to cost at least Rs 210.15 crore, for which a tender was again floated in April this year. The redeveloped market will be a four-storey building, including a basement and lower ground floor, and accommodate around 850 shops. The project aims to rehabilitate around 630 eligible stall owners and 200 fish vendors from Shivaji market. Both wholesalers and retailers will be accommodated in the new building. The revamped market structure is slated to be Mumbai’s first hygienic, uniform, open market space. The area of the shops in the new building will be roughly between 30 and 36 sq feet each.

“We should finalise the contractor for the project in three months time,” said civic chief Ajoy Mehta. Crawford Market, constructed in 1869 is a Grade 1 Heritage structure.

The estimated Rs 210 crore project includes civil work of Rs 150 crore which will include the new four-storey building, restoration of existing Beef marker structure, restoration of existing centrally located ‘Heritage Fountain’and ‘Heritage Chatri’ structure and landscaping work of others.

While, the electrical work of Rs 60 crore includes exterior and interior illumination, security systems, rain water harvesting system, provision for stack parking, provision of solar panels among others.
