Exhibition at St Xavier’s College to commemorate World War I centenary

Commemorating the centenary of World War I, the history department of St Xavier’s College, Dhobi Talao is holding an exhibition on the events that changed the course of world history in the last century. The exhibition, which would be held on February 5, will have a display of models and would also present the world war history from a subaltern perspective.

One of the major attractions of the exhibition, titled Avoidable Apocalypse, is a makeshift chamber resembling the Nazi concentration camps where one can actually witness the history of the war with the help of simulation. “The idea was to teach history in a practical manner while highlighting the alternative history of the event at the same time. For instance, while talking about the impact of the great depression, one must talk about how it impacted the poor instead of merely focusing on the broader economic angle. Through this exhibition, we want to present that part of the history on the world war and related events in front of the people” said Avkash Jadhav, Associate Professor and Head, Department of History at the college.

Jadhav said the department is also in talks with the Indian Army and the Air Force for displaying their photo collection and giving more information about warships and defence technology. “The entire exercise is being executed by first year BA students along with a few students from Bsc IT. Through this, students can learn about alternate perspectives to history firsthand and can also acquaint themselves to conducting some primary research on the issue” he added.
