To free encroached government lands to facilitate work on infrastructures and development projects, the state has made a policy decision of compensating people squatting on them by providing them with 269 sq ft tenements at free of cost.

The illegal encroachers on government land are turning out to be the main obstruction for the central and state projects. "To push these projects, we had made this crucial policy decision that the affected parties, even though they are encroachers, will be adequately compensated. The delay in projects also escalates their cost manifold. At times, it becomes so high that it becomes difficult to undertake such projects. Therefore, this decision," stated a government notification, a copy of which is with DNA.

"In the municipal corporation limit, the illegal occupant of government land is eligible to get 269 sq ft of tenement. He does not need to pay the government any cost of offered house. If the house is not available, then the total cost of this 269 sq ft of house will be offered in cash to the affected parties," the notification added.

The notification further reads that the tenement should be given free of cost to encroachers of the government land. If the tenement is not easily available, then encroachers should be given the total value of the tenement as per the prevailing rates. If his encroached slum is not eligible for the compensations, the affected party will not get any sort of help and compensation.

While compensating the affected person, the concern officials need to verify the records of the land and whether his encroachment is really affecting the projects undertaken. "Besides, for compensating encroachers or giving them alternative land parcels or cost of the tenement or constructions cost, the information of the affected parties needs to be linked to their Aadhaar card. The cost of the tenement will be borne by the authority whose projects are going to affect them," said an urban development officer requesting anonymity.

Clarifying the definition of an eligible family, the officer said that if it's a slum on encroached land, and more than one family are staying there and they all have ration cards, then all of them will be eligible for the free tenements or cost of the tenements. "These encroachers can be given tenements under the Prime Minister Awas Yojana. The district collector concerned will be held responsible for the implementation of this decision," said the officer.
