Out of the total around 28 vessels that are owned by the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), it has decided to auction off 10 vessels that are around 30 to 50 years old, and are considered as scrap.

The MMB is the nodal agency of water transport in the state of Maharashtra and is involved in activities like building passenger and cargo jetty and introducing passengers ferry services from Mumbai to the nearby island cities.

The MMB owns around 28 vessels that include barges, tugboats, speed boats, launcher etc. However, of the 28, around 10 vessels are almost unused or their operational cost has increased considering the maintenance cost in terms of repair costs increasing due to they being old. Due to this, it is now decided to carry out the valuation of these vessels and sell them though an auction.

An MMB official said, "We have decided to sell off the 10 vessels that are equal to that of scrap considering they were built between 1960 and 1980 and are already more than 30 to 50 year old. Hence, we have appointed a consultant that will come out with the valuation of all the vessels. Based on the valuation, we will later carry out the auction process."

The official added, "We might get somewhere between Rs 10 lakh to Rs 40 lakh for every vessel that we plan to sell off via auction. For us, it is scrap material but it depends on buyers, they might want to buy the vessels, refurbish and use them."

EXPECTED GAINS

Though a consultant make valuation of all the vessels before they go for auction, MMB is expecting to get somewhere between Rs 10 lakh to Rs 40 lakh for every vessel.
