Mumbai: Two more lakes to overflow, 80% lakes filled

One good rainfall is all it will take for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Coporation's Tansa and Vaitarna lakes to overflow, as they have reached almost to their maximum capacity.

Four lakes of the BMC already started overflowing last week following a good spell of rainfall last fortnight.

As per the data available with Hydraulic Engineering department of BMC, Tansa lake has filled around 99.75 per cent while level of middle Vaitarna is around 97.84 per cent. These two lakes have received 1554 mm and 1549 mm rainfall in their catchment areas, respectively.

The seven lakes that supply all of Mumbai's water — 3,750 million litre a day against the actual demand of 4,200 million litre — have seen substantial rise in water levels after good rainfall in the month of July in their catchment areas. The present level of water in all the lakes is almost the same as last year. Around 80.46 per cent capacity of all lakes have already been filed.

"Good rainfall in July month resulted rise in lake level," said Ashok Tawadiya, chief engineer of Hyrdaulic engineering department BMC.

The average rainfall of the city is between 2,100 mm to 2,400 mm. This year so far, city has already received 1700 mm rainfall. According to the civic hydraulic engineering department, on Sunday, the usable content in all the reservoirs was 11,64,549 million litre.
