The project affected persons (PAPs) of the proposed Nhava Sheva-Sewri sea link have demanded that the state government give them a package similar to the one being offered to the PAPs of the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) project.

A demand to this effect was made by the president of Nhava Sheva-Sewri-Jasai-Chirle sea link Project Sanghatana, Suresh Patil.

Patil said the state government will be acquiring the land from Jasai, Gavhan, Chirle, Shelghar, and other villages for the sea link project. “In this context, the PAPs from these areas should get a proper rate and satisfactory rehabilitation, before a final decision is taken. In an effort to pressurise the state authorities, the farmers have also formed the sanghatana, which will represent them in the meetings with the authorities,” Patil said.

He added that the sanghatana, under the leadership of former MP late DB Patil, held meetings with the state government, Cidco, road development corporation and other departments. “In these meetings, we had requested the government authorities to dole out justice to the farmers before acquiring their land for the mega project.

In one of the meetings held at the residence of DB Patil, it was decided that the sanghatana will insist upon getting a package similar to the one offered to the NMIA project PAPs, so the sons-of-the-soil will be benefitted and their future is secured,” Patil said.

The PAPs’ leader also informed that Prithviraj Chavan, during a meeting with the sanghatana members under the leadership of Panvel MLA Prashant Thakur, had agreed to give a similar package to airport and sea link PAPs.

“We welcome the offer given to the airport PAPs and if a similar package is given to the sea link PAPs, then we will acquire the land and give it to the state government. If our demands are not met, then we will not allow the sea link project to happen,” Patil concluded.

The 22-km Nhava Sheva-Sewri sea link project is expected to cost over Rs1,100 crore and will include the construction of five flyovers.
