Work on a skywalk in Andheri cost Mumbai 10 lakh litres of water in just one hour on Friday morning. A contractor, appointed by the MMRDA to work on the skywalk, burst the pipeline, which led to the wastage of water.

The contractor punctured the six-inch pipeline that supplies water
to the Juhu gully. The water supply is for two hours daily, but due to the burst, the BMC could supply water for less than an hour on Friday.

According to the hydraulic department of the BMC, the contractor had been asked to submit design of the project and pay for the diversion of the underground pipeline. But the contractor did not submit the detailed drawing and due to the technicalities, the BMC could not start the shifting work of the pipeline.

Vinay Deshpande, hydraulic engineer, said: “The contractor started the piling work bridge without submitting the drawing. Now, we will calculate the loss and send a bill for recovery to the MMRDA.”
Incidentally, this is 13th major pipeline burst in recent times attributed to various infrastructure works in the city.
