A wife should be like Sita who followed Ram during his exile: HC

A wife should be like goddess Sita who followed her husband, Lord Ram, to the forest and stayed there for 14 years.

This is what the Bombay high court said while hearing an appeal filed by the husband, seeking divorce. He said that his wife was not willing to shift to Port Blair with him. The husband  works with the Shipping Corporation of India and has a transferable job.  

"If there is no indication towards a third party, then for the child's sake at least the couple should come together," said division bench of Justice PB Majmudar and Justice Anoop Mohta.

The court also tried to counsel the couple, who has a nine year-old child. The judges spoke to them inside the chamber and heard them out. The husband wants to unite the family which has been separated since 2005 but the wife refused any kind of settlement when the matter.

The couple got married in 2000 and it was an arranged marriage. The wife is from Mumbai while the husband is from Kolkata. Since the husband was always on the ship for five years, the wife stayed in Mumbai.

In 2005 when he was given a ground posting at Port Blair, the wife refused to move there and since then they have been staying separately.

The husband filed for divorce and mentioned this as one of the grounds. In January, the court rejected his plea and ordered a monthly maintenance of Rs15,000 to the wife and child. The husband appealed against the order which is still pending.  The court will hear the case on June 21.
