The Amboli police has busted a gang of five women that broke into several homes in the western suburbs over the last few months. Seven break-ins cases — in residential areas, offices and wine shops — in Goregaon, MIDC, Vile Parle and Santacruz have been solved after the arrest. The gang largely targeted offices and wine shops for gadgets and liquor respectively, and sold off the liquor to slum dwellers at half the price. Loot worth Rs3 lakh, including laptops and computers, has been recovered.

“At the site of a break-in, the CCTV footage showed the women stealing laptops and other electronic equipment. One of them was identified at Nehru Nagar in Vile Parle and was arrested. During interrogation, she revealed details about other members and we later arrested three of them from the same area” said Ghamande, a senior police inspector. One of them is still absconding. Three of the five women are 18-20-years-old and are rag pickers.

“All the liquor had been sold but the gadgets were hidden in their homes. They planned to sell that off, too. We have recovered certain instruments to break locks and are now interrogating them to recover more loot,” said a police official.
