At a time when the centre’s relief for the Bihar’s flood-affected victims has almost dried up, students and teachers of an international school in Bandra-Kurla Complex are striving to reach out to them.

Students from American School of Bombay (ASB), who are mostly foreign nationals, have set a target of $60,000 (Rs30 lakh) to help the victims.

Students and teachers of ASB have formed a Bihar flood relief group to raise money and are working on the project since October. An initiative started by three teachers has now become a community effort with students, parents, friends and families in United States, all donating for the cause.

“It all started when a science teacher, Lisa Alsch, read about the calamity. Another teacher, Russell Bell, and Alsch called up several NGOs to figure out how they could extend their help. With help of an NGO Aid India, we donated medicines worth $4,500,” said Matt Duffy, physical education teacher, who also visited Bihar with the other two.

The trio spoke to the students. Three students visited the affected place in December. Sagar Galani, a Std IX student, said, “We wanted to set up a target and we arrived at a figure of $60,000 to be raised by June 2009. Though only 15-20 students were spearheading the project, many have now joined in. We are approaching business houses.”

“We went to Bihar in the winter. One of the kids we met had a big scar on his face, and the father told us that the hospitals were overcrowded. The amount that the government gave as relief was almost over by that time,” added Galani. During this trip, students delivered blankets, clothes, and gathered more information on the victims’ needs.

On April 18, they have organised a cultural event Embracing India, where they are asking business houses to contribute Rs60,000 so that they can meet the target. So far, $50,000 has been collected.
