Another accident on Bandra-Worli Sea Link; fourth in 10 days

In the fourth incident of its kind in 10 days, two persons were seriously injured when two cars collided on the  Bandra-Worli Sea Link on Wednesday at around 7 am.

Agra resident Ashu Singh, 27, who was driving a Maruti Swift, allegedly lost control of his vehicle and rammed it into an oncoming Maruti Zen being driven by Meenaz Badamiya, 49, a resident of Bandra and a businessman, who was going towards South Mumbai.

Though the impact of the crash was so severe that both the cars were completely mangled, no one was grievously injured. Badamiya’s right leg was fractured, while Singh sustained head injuries. Both were rushed to Lilavati Hospital by personnel from the Bandra police station who were patrolling the area.

Suraj Singh, 24, who was in the death seat, sustained minor injuries to his face and was discharged after being given first-aid at Podar Hospital, Worli, while another colleague of theirs, Akash Singh, 19, who was in the back seat, escaped unhurt.

This is the fifth accident on the sea link since its inauguration earlier this year, despite the police recently launching a campaign against speeding, and even penalising motorists found violating the 50kmph speed limit.

The youths from Agra came to the city to spend their year-end holidays with relatives in Andheri. The trio left Andheri on Tuesday night to drive around the city, and reportedly consumed alcohol.

On Wednesday, at 6 am, they had sandwiches at Haji Ali junction before taking the sea link to return to Andheri. Ashu Singh, at the wheel, lost control at the middle of the bridge and dashed into the left wall. The Swift then spun to the right, knocked down the plastic dividers, and rammed head-on into the Zen.

Inspector Bharat Worlikar, Worli police station, said investigations were on to find if Singh was drunk and have booked him for negligent and rash driving.
