Attacks on animals: NGO offers reward for information
Just a week back, PAWS, an NGO working for the rescue and treatment of animals, picked up a dog that was bleeding profusely after being struck on its back with a fish chopper.

After a series of attacks on cats and dogs around the Dombivli and Kalyan fish market areas, animal activists have come together to post a reward of Rs10,000 to nab the animal attackers.
Just a week back, plant and animals welfare society (PAWS), an NGO working for the rescue and treatment of animals, picked up a dog that was bleeding profusely after being struck on its back with a fish chopper.
The animal was rushed to the Bombay society for prevention of cruelty against animals (BSPCA) hospital for treatment on June 24.
"We have had several cases of cats and dogs being brutally attacked and poisoned, with most of the attacks being made with a fish chopper.
We have stuck posters announcing a reward of Rs10000 for anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this crime," said Nilesh Bhanage, founder, PAWS.
"The cats and dogs usually feed on the unwanted fish thrown out by the fisherwomen at the market. But since last month, we have had several cases of animal cruelty from that area.
Before the stray dog, we picked up a cat which had a deep wound on its side and was bruised badly. It was clear that a fish chopper was used," said Bhanage.
The reward is being offered by the federation of Indian animal protection organisations (FIAPO), which is based in Delhi.
However, the reward has not brought any positive information to the NGO and no arrests have been made in the case.
"Unfortunately, no one has yet come forward with information on the perpetrator. We are hoping that this offer will stress the point that we are serious about punishing those who think they can get away with injuring animals.
This is the second time that we have offered a cash reward in exchange of information," said Sowmya Reddy, manager, current event response centre, FIAPO.
According to her, once the information is received, arrests can be made and the person can be booked under IPC sections 428 and 429, which address the killing or maiming of an animal.
