Arun Borude, the police inspector who was on the run after being accused of raping a minor girl, was found dead near the railway tracks at Shrirampur taluka of Ahmednagar district on Wednesday morning. The police suspect it to be a case of suicide.

Borude, a former encounter specialist, was dismissed from service after his name cropped up in the rape of a 15-year-old girl in a Powai apartment last month. He had been absconding and remained incommunicado since November 9. The Powai police had registered an FIR against him on November 1 and launched a manhunt to nab him.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that it is a case of suicide. However, we are looking at all aspects,” government railway police (GRP) commissioner Tukaram Chavan said.

The news of Borude’s death came on the day the Powai police filed a 288-page charge sheet in the case. Borude’s lawyer Naveen Chomal has alleged that the he died in dubious circumstances and sought a judicial inquiry into the death.

The body was recovered after a railway driver informed the station manager of Shrirampur about a death on tracks at 12.30pm. It was shifted to the local Kamgar hospital first and later to the super specialty Sai hospital in Shirdi. The doctors declared it a case of dead on arrival, the police said.

Joint commissioner of police (crime) Himanshu Roy said: “Borude sustained injuries on his head, face, chest and the back bone.” There were no cut marks on his body, which is a sign of suicide on tracks, the police said. They have registered a case of accidental death.

Borude was a native of Ahmednagar district and the police suspect he was in hiding there. The spot where he was found is around 40km from his village. Since the locality has some residential settlements nearby, the police expect to find eyewitnesses.

The Borude file
Borude and five other men allegedly raped a 15-year-old girl in a Powai flat many times between February and March this year. The incident came to light when the victim gave birth to a girl in October at the Rajawadi hospital in Ghatkopar. The DNA sample of the baby matched with one of the accused Mohan Chand, a real estate agent. The police arrested three persons in connection with the case.

Borude went on leave after a case was registered and eventually went underground. He had applied for anticipatory bail but the sessions court as well as the Bombay high court (HC) had rejected his plea.
