Mumbai’s Raj Bhavan was bustling with activity on Saturday, when the staff of the directorate of census operations began the census on the auspicious occasion of golden jubilee of Maharashtra, by enumerating Governor K Sankaranarayanan at his residence.

The enumerators took the Governor’s signature on the census and national population registration (NPR) forms, in which personal details of the Governor’s family were entered.

Municipal commissioner Swadhin Kshatriya has been appointed the principal census officer and additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar is the additional municipal census officer, as per the 1948 Act. They were present at the time when the Governor was being enumerated.

This door-to-door process of data collection for the census, by 38,000 enumerators, is part of a crucial data collection, following which citizens will be provided Unique Identification Cards (UIC), which will be their proof of identity.

The enumerator took signatures on both forms — the census and the NPR one — from the head of the family, in this case the Governor, and a receipt was handed over to him.

“It’s important for citizens to maintain this receipt as enumerators will come again for the process of biometric iris detection with fingerprints of each citizen. UID cards will be issued only after that,” said Kshatriya.

“I appeal to the citizens of Mumbai to give correct information, and it’s important as UID is a must for every citizen. This Census is integral to managing the country’s population. We are next only to China in terms of population after all,” said Sankaranarayanan.
The Governor also said that while citizens should co-operate with the enumerators, the latter in-turn should be polite, with the uneducated especially, and to make them understand the importance of Census data collection.

Mhaiskar informed that according to the Census data collected in 2001, Mumbai had a population of 1.35 crore, which is one-tenth of Maharashtra’s population. Chief minister Ashok Chavan was the second individual to be enumerated at his Varsha bungalow. His wife, two daughters and a staff member from Varsha were counted in the Census data collection.

Chavan suggested to Mhaiskar, that enumerators should drop a reminder slip for citizens not present at home, about the Census data collection activity.
