The case of the Singaporean-Japanese couple seeking accommodation and employment from the central government has opened a Pandora’s Box, the Bombay high court said on Wednesday.

The court directed the additional solicitor general DJ Khambata to seek directions from the external affairs ministry on providing employment or accommodation to foreigners acquitted by a court held up in the country owing to appeals filed by prosecuting agencies.

“There are so many Pakistani and Bangldeshi who are in a similar situation, please tell us whether they can be granted accommodation on grounds of human rights,” said justice P B Majmudar.

Singapore national Zainab Yousuf, 57, and her Japanese husband, Tetsyo Hiryama, 62, have sought a court direction to the government to provide them with source of livelihood, as they had been acquitted by the high court in a narcotics case last year, but were held up in the city owing to a appeal filed by the customs department in the Supreme Court.
