After city music fans shelled out travel and concert ticket money to attend the NH7 Weekender in Pune, the newest music festival in town, The Tilt, beginning today, will come as a pleasant surprise.
The two-day festival will not only play host to a diverse set of musicians and jam sessions at Blue Frog, but also try to sneak you in for free – the festival will start at 7.30pm on both nights, allowing attendees to sneak in before Blue Frog starts levying its entry charge of Rs300 at 9pm.
The event has been organised by Mumbai-based band Something Relevant, in conjunction with the Red Bull Bedroom Jam project and Blue Frog.
The band’s bassist, Stuart DaCosta, says that the festival’s timings have been geared towards encouraging a younger crowd to attend these concerts.
“Our band has been around for a while,” he says of Something Relevant, a Mumbai-based band that has performed locally and internationally since forming in 2003.
“We’ve been trying to organise a festival for some time now. With the help of Blue Frog, it’s finally happening.” The band is also one of the parties that organised the free concerts at the Hanging Gardens in February, along with the Bombay Elektrik Project and the Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
This year, the Tilt features a strong mix of rock, jazz, funk, electronica, and folk. Besides offering a unique line-up of musicians, the festival will also feature visual artists.
Clouth Trio, a jazz band from Germany; Bombay Bassment, Tribu Zulu, a reggae band from Italy; Glitterbug and Ronni Shendar from Germany, Blakc, The Pulp Society and Something Relevant will be the bands performing.
The highlights of the festival promise to be Glitterbug and Tribu Zulu. Glitterbug’s music is often described as a visual and score-like approach to club music, and his unique compositions and instrumentation make him one of the most interesting and unique producers today.
Nuove Tribu Zulu began their musical experiments as an attempt to understand the “social function” of music. Their sound is a combination of rock, folk, gypsy, punk, ska, classical, polka and Taranta.
Laura Dinitto of Nuove Tribu Zulu, a band that’s collaborated with Rajasthani musicians in the past, says, “We are very excited about performing in Mumbai, and our new CD will be releasing soon
as well.”
Something Relevant, fresh from their stint at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, will be performing on the second day.
