Renowned British architect William R Ainsworth and his German counterpart Frid Buhler have been exploring Mumbai for the past two days to check out the city’s infrastructure development.

Ainsworth and Buhler, along with many other world renowned architects, are in city to be part of a special seminar on Monday, which has been organised by the Rachana Sansad Academy of Architecture to celebrate its golden jubilee.

“I had visited the city before about 15 years back. The only difference I see today is the increased number of buildings. Everything else, including the huge amount of slums, remains virtually the same,” Ainsworth said about Mumbai.

Ainsworth — who developed a metro model for his hometown of New Castle in UK way back in 1973 — feels that cities full of narrow roads, like Mumbai, should go for an underground metro instead of an elevated one. “Though it’s a fact that the underground metro costs more than the elevated one, one must plan these projects as long term social solutions. Elevated metro system can destroy the future of narrow roads - especially of those who stay on the ground floor,” Ainsworth said.

On the influence that politicians have in the implementation process of huge infrastructure projects, Buhler said that worldwide such pressures were a common phenomenon.

“When an architect or an engineer designs a project, he is obviously thinking about the future generations. However, the final approval on any project is in the hands of bureaucracy and political leadership, which can falter with designs for some vested interests,” Buhler, who is chairman of the association for the validation of architectural and planning studies in Berlin, said.

Buhler added that for faster implementation of any infrastructure projects, political commitment is equally important.
