Gold, diamond jewellery and a mobile phone, collectively worth Rs24.33 lakh, were stolen during the wedding of a Union minister's relative in a posh hotel in Mumbai, police said.

The incident occurred during the wedding ceremony of Anil Kamat and Devika Gogate on Tuesday at hotel Blue Sea at Worli, central Mumbai.

The groom, Anil, is a relative of Gurudas Kamat, minister of state for communications & information technology, police said.

A theft case has been registered against unidentified persons and further probe was on, said Sub-Inspector Uttam Mane.

According to Mane, Devika removed some of her gold and diamond ornaments before going for dinner and handed them over to her mother Rohini, who put the valuables and a cellphone in a purse and gave it to a relative.

"When Rohini returned after dinner, she realised that the purse has been stolen," Mane said.

Had there been CCTVs at the venue, it would have become easier to nail the culprit, Mane said.
