In an attempt to practise what it preaches, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which is planning to make grey water recycling compulsory, is implementing the maiden scheme in its own backyard.

The city’s first grey water recycling plant is taking shape at the BMC sewerage department officials’ staff quarters at Dadar. The budget of the project is Rs50,000.
According to the plan, the grey water being used by the 80 families residing there will be recycled using a treatment facility. The facility will be set up in a 50 sq ft space at the back of the building.

DL Shinde, deputy municipal commissioner, said that close to 3,000 litres of water will be recycled daily in three months’ time. “The facility will use activated carbon and gravel sand filters to screen and treat the waste water,” said SS Palav, Shinde’s deputy.

The treated water will be supplied back to the houses using a special plumbing arrangement. A bill regarding the same is expected to be tabled for approval immediately after the elections.
