How the Pakistani ‘spy’ recced 25 vital installations

Javed Mozawala, the suspected ISI agent who was recently arrested by the crime branch of Mumbai Police for spying, had
adopted a simple method to avoid suspicion while conducting recce of vital
installations.

Sources in the force say that during his visits to vital installations the accused would draw the map of the area on a piece of paper. However, after making the sketch, Mozawala would crumple the paper, throw it on the street, and leave the spot.

Sources add that he would return to the place again in around half and hour and after assessing that no one is looking at him, he would pick up the paper and then also click pictures of these installations with his cell phone. In case he did not find the paper in its place, he would leave the place immediately, with the apprehension that something is amiss.

Investigators say that Mozawala adopted this modus operandi to avoid suspicion and stay away from any prying eyes. Besides, if were to get caught during the recce, it would yield nothing.

According to the investigators, Mozawala, had recced at least 25 vital installations across the country, including the city’s Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Western Naval
Command headquarters in Colaba and the Defence Academy in Lonavala.

These maps and pictures were then reportedly passed on to two officials from the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, with whom he is said to have been in touch with regularly.

Mozawala, a resident of Byculla, was recently arrested by the crime branch and was charged under sections of the Officials Secret Act.

The police claim to have found various incriminating documents from him. This reveals his connections with the intelligence agencies in Pakistan.
