The Maharashtra Law Graduate Association (MLGA) has opposed the demand that Elphinstone station on the western suburban railway in Mumbai be renamed.

Lord Elphinstone was the governor of Bombay province in 1850s, and was responsible for city's growth, the association said in a press release.

MLGA said it feared that the railway ministry would change its name to Prabhadevi, bowing to demand from some quarters.

"So called political leaders are playing cheap political gimmicks," the release said.

The association also opposed the ministry's proposal to rename Grant Road station as August Kranti station.

Blunders such as renaming Victoria Terminus as Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus should not be repeated, the release added.
